Introduction

As the fundamental activity for learning knowledge, consolidating memory and improving the efficiency for the aggrandizement reviews, note-taking has always played an important role in the study life, especially at the university. Therefore, it is necessary for people to know which approach is the best in taking note, using pen and paper or just a laptop. Research on note-taking shows that using pen and paper in note taking is a good help for students and contributes to improving their learning efficiency and expediting access and better utilization of information than using laptop. Too much use of the laptop in taking notes does not only impair the students’ learning capability in multitasking and distraction, but also results in shallower processing (Mueller & Oppenheimer 1), which deserved to arouse people’s much thinking and make a deep research about it.

The question that use of laptop in note taking is often thought of as a controversial issue between students and teachers. Although for many students, the laptop can take more notes at the lecture, so that they often argue that laptop as a very useful electronic device, is beneficial (Mitra & Steffensmeier 417) in class and even recommend to the professors to allow them to bring the laptop in the class for many times, some researchers, exports, scholars and professors still hold different ideas and perspectives about it. For example, Hembrooke & Gay once conducted a study on the relationship between laptop and the lecture in which they made a surgery among students who were in an upper level communications courses and were divided into two groups. One of the groups was equipped with the laptop to take note during the lecture and another was not. Hembrooke & Gay argued that instead of making students pay their attention to the lecture, the laptops would make them distract their performance during the lectures (46) and such distraction greatly influenced their note taking and was not beneficial to their information acquisition. In another study, based on the prior study, Mueller & Oppenheimer in 2014 made a detailed data analysis about in the article titled “The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking” through three studies and also came to the similar conclusion that “students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand” (1). Meanwhile, although as is known to all, the laptop, to some extent, can help student make more notes during the lectures, as mentioned by Brown in 1988 that with use of the laptop, it is no doubt that students can type much quickly and faster than students who depend on pen and paper (318), there is still an assumption is invalid. “Does faster typing and more notes mean that students have concentrated on their lecture and absorbed more information?” To be honest, the answer is obviously “No”. However, for those students who prefer to take note by pen and paper, the process of taking notes is the process of annotation and rearrangement for learners. Both handwritten and typed texts contribute to their knowledge acquisition. Therefore, it is powerful evident “whereas taking more notes can be beneficial, laptop note takers’ tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words is detrimental to learning” (Mueller & Oppenheimer 1). Moreover, other researchers also have found the similar conclusion. For example, in the perspective of Ward & Tatsukawa, both of them thought that “class notes are characterized by free spatial organization, many small chunks of text, and a dense mix of text and graphic elements” (959). All of those characteristics of note taking demonstrate that in order to make effective note, the students who use laptop must “minimize the need to switch between input tools” (959). However, in such short period, students in the lecture will miss some information provided by the professors. While for these students who use pen and paper, they can use some simple or special symbols to mark the professors’ sayings, which is a sincere help to learn knowledge.

In my own studies, I analyzed the data collected from my note-taking for six days, shown as follows:

For me, I prefer to use pen and paper rather than the laptop. When I used my pen and paper to take notes during my lectures, I can reflect and rethink the contents I have written down. It was an amazing process. Besides, in some science courses, such as math or chemistry, there are a lot of formulas. Hand-writing notes make it easier for me to note the key points than the laptop because how much time I spend in taking notes is the important principle for me to choose the better one. What’s more, when I am using my pen and paper, I also can use some special symbols to stand for, which will accelerate my speed in taking note and acquiring information. All in all, I firmly believe that pen is a more powerful weapon than keyboard.
