Fauna

Common murre of California, another name calledcommon guillemot, they recolonized back to Prince Island in July, 2011. Prince Island is isle of the San Miguel Island, and this migration was the first time since the year of 1912.

Northern fur seals, the eared seals, they transferred their colony smoothly again and this time that aimed at San Miguel Island in the 1960s. And this was the third colony of northern fur seals in the United States. The significant and remarkable label is the flipper tags of the first seals which could distinguish and confirm them came from the Commander Islands or Pribilof Islands located in the Bering Sea. Nowadays, the colony numbers of the San Miguel Island are considerable approach ten thousand animals which perch together on the San Miguel Island.

The sea lions and seals are common and main food sources by Great white sharks that they inhabit San Miguel Island’s adjacent waters.

There are two valuable and rare species Spotted Skunk and pygmy mammoth that lived on the San Miguel Island. Unfortunately, both of them became extinct. At the same time, another kind of unique specie called island fox on the island is still live on the San Miguel Island.

Weather

Unlike the other four islands of the Channel Islands are protected by the broad ocean, the San Miguel Island receives without any guarantees. The San Miguel Island suffers gale of wind came from northwest across the entire island for much of the time. The wind speed in this area typically surpasses 25 mph and can exceed 50 mph. The wind usually cease as the strong high pressure cross the mainland.

It is not surprised to see that thick fog on the San Miguel Island, particular in the two moths May and June. The fog would disappear at the specific time when fresh gale blow bring with extra fog which came from the ocean. The temperature on the island is seldom more than 55 °F during the foggy days. The highest temperature of monthly temperature average high is July and August and both of them are beyond 70°F. The lowest temperature of monthly temperature average high is March and April and both of them are no more than 48°F.The temperature on the island is seldom more than 55 °F during the foggy days. The annual amount of precipitation on the island approach 17 inches and the rainfall concentrate two moths respectively in March and November.

Terrestrial Invasive Plants

On San Miguel Island, plants and animals are easy to be affected and destroyed by many factors such as living space, food, populations, physical boundary and hereditary variability. These factors not only cause the change of their living style but also form intangible threat and even make these species approach to the boundary of extinction. Among these threats most direct and destructive threat named biological invasion mainly through all kinds of methods.

The invasive weeds are the common one, their terminologies usually used to depict those plants which are not belong to the local area but own great power to grow rapidly and diffuse uncontrolled in the native area , which make the native plants get high risk of them. Invasive weeds would occupy the living and development room of native plants, and they even grab the food resources of local food, which would cause the local plants, lost their necessities gradually and decreased rapidly and eventually become exciton. For another thing, the invasive weeds unlike those plants living on the San Miguel Island, they frequently make the soil and water suffered great waste in some extent, they couldn’t safeguard the water and keep the soil, which would give rise to the fertile soil and clear water decrease gradually, and the native plants would suffer great disaster.

Grasslands

On San Miguel Island, the biggest and most widespread area is the grasslands, these pant communities across the San Miguel Island along with coastline to grow and extend. On the other four islands of the Channel Islands, there are also exists the grasslands as the San Miguel Island which common appear on the on coastal terraces as well as slopes, these areas born with the activities such as gazing. What’s more, one of the most widespread species of plants named annual grasses. In the grassland communities, perennial bunchgrasses and local forbs are two kinds of plant species grow and develop here whereas both of them are not widespread species lived on San Miguel Island. Besides, on San Miguel Island, there are many shrubs live in the native island including all kinds of oaks and lemonade berry. The existence of these species shows and suggests that these plants lived at the previous time. On San Miguel Island, these shrubs have a remarkable trend to grow and spread rapidly which could reasonably explain the reason why some non-native annual grassland came back here again.

Oak Woodlands

Woodlands, refers to a piece of natural forests, secondary forest and plantation land covered; Including timber stands, economic forests and firewood forests and shelter forest and other kinds of trees, forest land, young forest and nursery occupies. The woodlands on San Miguel Island are in which trees are the superior species to other species. For all not all the trees live on San Miguel Island, the woodland still plays important role to the diversity of the island.

On San Miguel Island, it exist a large amount of oak woodlands, according to the numbers and scale, island oak and coast live oak are ranked first. On San Miguel Island, coast live oak superior to other oak trees, which grow and spread in a good trend in the coastal oak woodland community. The slopes facing the north and canyons in shaped, these two places are easily to find coast live oak.

Black Mountain and Soledad Peak of the San Miguel Island could discover the island oaks called Groves. The gazing activities become heavier and heavier year after year, the oak seedlings of new island are hard to find the suitable living space to grow in these surroundings because of the erosion. For all the new seedlings of the tope of Black Mountain has regained slowly and up to the extent that make its new seedlings develop around. Under the humid and deep canyons, Small oak woodlands are also discovered where exists on the western San Miguel Island located in the slopes which face the north.
