As the war on drugs is in progress, the imprisonment rate is keep increasing in America and the amounts of African Americans in the prison are much more than the Whites. To this situation, Michelle Alexander argues that war on drugs unfairly targets minorities, and as for me, I agree with her. Then I will describe this opinion in detail in this passage.

The war on drugs has been implemented for nearly 20 years and it has a profound impact on the characteristic of American prisons, such as the increasing rate of African Americans’ incarceration. As Matthew Bigg wrote in Reuters on Dec. 4, 2015, the number of African Americans imprisoned in the United States for drug-related crimes is 10 times higher than that of whites, even if they sell or use drugs at a similar level(MatthewBiggF7). In addition, the Washington Judicial Policy Institute's research shows that in the United States, almost all major counties have strong racism in the sentences of drug-related crimes. In 2002, 1.5 million of the 19.5 million drug abusers were arrested. 17.5 million people were sent to prison for drug trafficking, among which blacks accounted for half, while blacks account for only 13% of the American total population(Alethenderpars4). From these data, it can been found that the war of drugs unfairly targets the minorities and it also shows that Officials who monitor probation officers are often more lenient toward white offenders. For example, on the one hand, they often find some high-sounding reasons for the white’s crimes, such as broken families; on the other hand, they always reduce the causes of black crimes to one - moral corruption.

Besides of the discrimination from the governmental officials, the laws related to drugs crime in the United Sates are also unfair to the African Americans. For example, a federal decision imposes that hiding 5g (0.2-ounce) " dilute Cocaine " will be sentenced the same amount of punishment as hiding 500g (18 ounce) cocaine, but it is more common for the blacks to use "dilute Cocaine " and whites use cocaine more often(Polly F.37) .Thus, the federal minimum sentence for drug-related crimes has a much more pronounced impact on the blacks. This treatment is so obviously unfair to the African American. What’s more, the Clinton couple have repeatedly said in public that the bill is a mistake and it need to be amended. However, the bill haven’ been revised yet.

If taking into account prisoners, you can found that a vast majority of African Americans in cities have been labeled felons.  And in Chicago, this data is about 80%(MatthewBigF7).These men will be deprived the right of voting and the fair opportunities in housing, employment and education. It is said that the reason why so many blacks are behind bars and led into a permanent, second-class status is that they are bad guys by chance. As a matter of fact, some researches indicate that white teenagers are much more likely to participate in illegal drug dealing than that of black teenagers. But in some states, 80% to 90 % African Americans are sent to prison as drug offenders. How contradictory the two data are!

The war of drugs was officially declared by president Ronald Reagan in 1982,. At the beginning, the war didn’t have so much reference with drug crime but almost everything to do with racial politics. At the same time, the rate of drug crime has been declining, but not rising. However, the rate of imprisonment is increasing and even has reached an all-time high in the history. The fundamental cause of this two contradictory situations is the racial prejudice and unfair treatments to the African Americans.  The war of drugs works like a charm. During present more than ten years, black drugs and users and dealers have been regular customers in American TV news and newspaper stories. The Congress and Legislatures will put billions of dollars into the war of drugs and implement harsh minimum sentences time for drug –related crimes. For example, in many states, the sentences time of drug –related crimes are longer than that of murderers receiving.

In terms of the current situations and policies, the drug-related crimes will actually decrease but the imprisonment of drug-related criminals will not be declined because in essence, the war of drugs in the United States is a plan aiming at racial politics instead of the solution of drug-related crimes. Looking at the practical measures in controlling drug-related crimes carried by the American government, it can easily be found that war on drugs unfairly targets minorities-the African American. This is really an urgent problem need to be dealt with.
