This report introduces an interview to Peter Singer. Through the briefly introduction of his growth and schooling trajectory, as well as Singer’s philosophy and controversial ideas, readers could know Singer and his viewpoints generally.

1. Growth and schooling trajectory of Singer

Peter Singer was born in Melbourne after his parents emigrated from Nazi Germany to Australia. Young Singer was a football fan, raised some pets but he is not an animal lover in the usual sense. He studied law, history and philosophy in the University of Melbourne where he received his BA degree, and later received Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. At Oxford, Singer began to think about animal rights, rather than spiritual issue. Now Singer is a professor of bioethics at the Centre for Human Values at Princeton University, also he is a laureate professor at Melbourne University. For Singer, his time is divided between the above two universities.

2. Atheist Singer

Singer is an atheist. He is described as “Doctor Death and Western philosophy’s most significant pioneer since Bertrand Russell”; he is also called “a Nazi in Germany and the most dangerous man on earth in America”. When he was appointed by Princeton University, he even met with death threats. Singer admits that, the experience of his grandmother, Amalie, and his grandfather, David Oppenheim, is part of reasons in him being an Atheist. Singer describes his grandparents’ experience in detail in his book Pushing Time Away: My Grandfather and the Tragedy of Jewish Vienna. Singer thinks his grandmother survived the concentration camps by manipulating her position in the community, even so the old lady declared: “If God exists, why would He let such a thing as the Holocaust happen?” Singer’s grandfather, a respectable rabbis, a classical scholar and a member of Freud’s “Wednesday Group”, whose faith was destroyed by the Nazis and died in the Theresienstadt camp. By tracing the grandparents’ tragedy, combined with other reasons, Singer gradually abandons the idea of “an omniscient, omnibenevolent God”, and believes that “human beings face the problems of existence alone”, “no one else is going to do it” for human beings.

3. Peter Singer’s philosophy

Peter Singer is well-known for his animal ethics viewpoints. The first time Peter Singer thought about animal rights was in his post-graduate time at Oxford University, where he met a vegetarian and encountered animal ethically. In 1975, Peter Singer published his famous book Animal Liberation, which was sold roughly 600,000 copies around the word. But at the very beginning, in regard to the animal ethics, he said, he couldn’t even persuade his own parents. The main theme of Animal Liberation is that, “the boundary between human and ‘animal’ is completely arbitrary”, even animals show lower intelligence than the average human, “intelligence does not provide a basis for providing nonhuman animals any less consideration than such intellectually challenged humans”.

Since being in America, Singer published a lot of books, as a famous scholar, Singer is anti-Bush or anti-Israel to some extent. He wrote a book The President of Good and Evil, analyzing George Bush’s ethical beliefs; he also gave a lecture at the University of California at Los Angeles in regard to that subject.

From the reporter, Singer is a mild and moderate person; however the view he holds always provokes the strongest reactions, such as his advocacy of infanticide in relation to the severely disabled, and meets with wild protests in Germany and America.

Singer thinks ethics should be lived as well as spoken, that’s why he became “a near-vegan” and thinks people have a duty to help poor in other countries, he constantly donates 20% of his income to foreign aid organization. In his new book The Ethics of What We Eat which was cooperated with Jim Mason, they explores a new idea that every forkful of food, despite animal ethics or treatment of animals, degrades labour conditions and environmental in other countries.

From the reporter, as a philosopher, Singer is serious, standing on his ground no matter what the outside world agree with or against him. In the meantime, he is cautious, remarkable, and serious to some extent, when asked to tell a joke, he said he is “not telling a joke”. All in all, Peter Singer has his own understanding of faith and reason, he said, “reason is all we have to work out better outcomes. No one else is going to do it for us, that’s for sure”.
