Contextual Research

“Farmer and sons walking in the face of a dust storm. Cimarron County, Oklahoma”

is a photo with creator as Arthur Rothstein in 1936. The medium of it is Silver Gelatin Print. Its print size is 8 x 10 inches or smaller. “The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands” is another photo pictured by Arthur Rothstein in 1936. Its medium is Silver Gelatin Print as well. Its print size is 8 x 10 inches or smaller as well. Thus, this medium is common to the works of Arthur Rothstein. Their creation is linked with specific events in his development: his participation and enrollment in Resettlement Administration, later superseded by FSA. Arthur Rothstein(1915-1985), is a photographer who graduated from Columbia University in 1935, and was hired as the first photographers of the Information Division of the Farm Security Administration or FSA in 1935. Created in 1936, both of those works are works of early creation period of Arthur Rothstein’s career. In addition, as a lot of documentary photography are filmed by him for FSA during the 1930s , those works belong to a larger series of work on plight of farm workers, tenants, and domestic migrants.

The subject matter of plight of farm workers and rural life and documentary style is typical of Arthur Rothstein’s works. Of nearly 50 years’ photography career, Arthur Rothstein is influenced a lot by his work as the FSA government photographer. As Rothstein worked with the program concerned with the economic problems of small farmers, most of the pictures shot are about the life of farmers in rural areas. The experience is very helpful for the formation of his photography philosophy and style. He was later engaged in photographic work, which was the natural development of the documentary photography that was filmed at that time. He learned to be the witnesses of the events and reported the associated people and the environment in a keen and intelligent way. From his works, people can understand the value of the work of the documentary photography. His work records the dilemma of the country under the Great Depression. In the 1930s, when the American economy was in recession, documentary photography really showed its power to reveal the facts and the power of influence to a country in 1935. Under the guidance of Roy Stryker, Arthur Rothstein and a group of dedicated photographers use cameras to present the plight of rural life to the nation.

In addition, his works in the section is also closely related to historical events in the 20th century. He was under the guidance of Roy Stryker in the filming of documentary photography. Stryker, a former lecturer in economics at Columbia University has a strong social conscience. Although he is not a photographer, he believes that the documentary photography has a moving power. Thus when FSA was set up, Stryker employed and learned from photographers such as Arthur Rothstein, and photographers also help him plan the FSA photography. This created a unique combination of creativity in the history of photography and a hit of documentary photography. Between the mid-1930s and World War II, the U.S. government provided funds for this massive documentary photography program to record American life in a time of great social upheaval(Finnegan, 2006, p.116). Thus, “Farmer and sons walking in the face of a dust storm. Cimarron County, Oklahoma” and “The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands”are related to larger historical events . FSA does not provide employment or relief, but is trying to solve the plight of farm workers, tenants, and domestic migrants who have survived the Great Plains filled with dust storms and drought. And during the period the seven-year photography program, it is the largest collaborative achievement in the history of social documentary photography, which serve as the historic record of the New Deal and the Great Depression. In this sense, his works in the section is related to the historical events of founding of FSA and the Great Depression in the 20th century.

his works in the section is also closely related to larger stylistic movement. After the launch of a series of highly influential photography program, it is making for the form of documentary photography movement of the 1930s. The purpose of a documentary photo is to inform people or move people to take action after seeing it, leading to change of behavior or prevent an error or damage, or to support or encourage something that benefits the crowd. However, sometimes this type of documentary report is misinterpreted as propaganda as a close relationship with government. The photo “The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands” was under attack of the Fargo Forum which regarded it as a fake and manipulative methods , known as a“skull controversy”, leading to doubts over government owned photography (Finnegan, 2001,p. 133). But the definition of propaganda is the deliberate dissemination of certain ideas, information, facts or arguments to assist or harm a certain target, individual or institution. They are trying to persuade people, not to be objective and impartial. So they may distort, select, omit and arrange their material, and cause the presentation of their information to be biased. On the contrary, documentary photographers must be faithful to the facts when they persuade people. The photographer had a sense of participation and concern to pass to the viewer. If there is a choice, it is also a balanced way to prevent misinterpretation of the facts. The techniques used are straightforward and are not man-made. The purpose of documentary photography by Arthur Rothstein is to understand environment, people's lifestyles, work and games, the social structure and organization of the people, and their living environment in the 1930s. Thus, it is one part of larger stylistic movement----documentary photography movement of the 1930s.

5. Market analysis

Works of Arthur Rothstein are still very popular and active in the auction market. There is quite a large number of works coming from different creation period to be auctioned in the market. More than two thousand photographs by Arthur Rothstein in his Photograph Collection was in the lists of auction of Doyle New York on October 13, 2011(Artdaily.com, 2011).  In addition, the price of his single piece of photograph is also not low. For example,  his photograph “ Girl at Gee's Bend, Alabama” in 1937 with the medium as Gelatin silver print, and size of image 14 x 18 inches, signed in pencil had its price estimated as $800 to 1,200 in 2011 at auction of Doyle New York(Artdaily.com, 2011). This photograph can provide a very useful reference for a market analysis of “Farmer and sons walking in the face of a dust storm. Cimarron County, Oklahoma” and “The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands”.

It is because that those three works enjoyed a lot of similaritythe medium of them is Silver Gelatin Print; their sizes are all 8 x 10 inches or smaller. At last, they are all photos with creator as Arthur Rothstein in 1936 and 1937, which means that they are created during the early creation stage of Arthur Rothstein. In addition, based on data of Artnet price database, there were nearly 100 photos which had already been sold at auction, but their price of auction was not free and thus not available(Artnet.com, 2017). However, it can prove once again that works of Arthur Rothstein will be very popular and active in the auction market as there has been a large number of them that were already sold in the past.

In addition, if it is to analyze the works of Arthur Rothstein from the perspective of social and aesthetic value, those works of Arthur Rothstein are still having high demands in the auction market. Many documentary photos are not only for immediate use, but also for historical purposes. These documentary photographs are kept in the Library of Congress(Finnegan, 2006, p.116). They are now regarded as national treasures. Those two works in selection have a very high social and aesthetic value. If the viewers see the documentary photos, they are moved and may take the action, because they agree with the concern of photographer who witnessed the subject matter. Through collecting, preserving and researching documentary photos like  “Farmer and sons walking in the face of a dust storm. Cimarron County, Oklahoma” and “The bleached skull of a steer on the dry sun-baked earth of the South Dakota Badlands”, people in the present and future can understand the past event, life and scenes in the 1930s. This will give them more competitiveness in the market.
