The Brazilian Revolution and the protests against the exploitation of the colonial system were both factors that made the colonial system "outdated"

Initial economic development, transmission of liberalism, existing slavery, Brazilian revolution and protest against the exploitation of the colonial system are the factors make the colonial system increasingly “obsolete”. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Europe experienced the Napoleonic wars and Portugal was occupied by French in 1808, which brought about the spirit of liberalism into Brazil colonies. Therefore Brazilian people began to develop the awareness of revolution against Portuguese colonists when Portuguese royal family and aristocracy fled to Brazil and Inversão brasileira occurred. Through long time of Brazil mahogany harvesting, gold rush, sugar cane cultivation and Brazil’s trade ports’ opening to Britain, Brazil had developed low-level economic development under the economic exploitation of Portugal. And Prince Pedro initiated a large-scale reform including the abolition of royal salt tax, the reorganization of government agencies and emphasizing more on people's freedom after his Portuguese royal family returned to Lisbon. Besides, black slaves trafficking still existed and the Brazilian black slaves could not endure the bad living environment and their rebellion was growing.

Before independence, there were armed conflicts between the Portuguese army and the armed teams in Pernambuco, Bahia and other places. Because Portuguese royal family returned to Lisbon and Portugal decided the provinces of Brazil shall be under the jurisdiction of Portugal and the colonists were aimed at reinforcing control on the Brazilian colonies, they then sent Portuguese troops into Brazil to combat separatist activities in Brazil and Bloody clashes erupted. After independence, Emperor Pedro I’s sending troops to suppress Confederação do Equador, Uruguay’s independence and black uprising were the conspiracies because Emperor Pedro I rewrote the constitution to maintain his own imperial power and implemented authoritarian rule over the country, causing dissatisfaction among people and especially revolts among republicans and liberals.

The respectively different general goals of the parties of unified movement for independence were factors mitigated in favor of a unified independence movement because provincial and local armed teams wanted to grab Brazil's military power, Prince Pedro aimed at keep the Portuguese aristocracy and his own imperial power, republicans and liberals pursued the republican political system and Constitutionalism while Brazilians were dedicated to be free from the rule and exploitation from Portuguese colonists. And the factor mitigated against a unified independence movement was the common goal of each party because armed teams, liberals, Prince Pedro and the wide Brazilians all expected Brazil’s independence and they needed the power of each other and reached a harmonious balance.

Under the influence of liberalism, imperial Brazil implemented constitutional monarchy, establishing parliament, government, head of state (Imperador) ,the judiciary institution and etc,.  Brazilian constitution stipulated that Brazil was a centralized state of monarchy with provincial governors appointed by the emperor and no autonomy for provinces. And legislative, judicial, administrative and "Poder Moderador" power directly responsible to the emperor shall respectively separated. The constitution also stipulated the composition of the House and Senate , the freedom of speech and press, the abolition of press inspection and the prohibition of slavery, and the Catholic Church shall be regarded as the state religion, which was a mixture of liberalism and monarchy. Since the domestic situation was chaotic then, the contracts and conflicts among armed teams, liberals, Emperor Pedro I, large land aristocracy and Brazilian people exposed, so Emperor Pedro I needed to utilize Authoritarian autocracy to solve the complicated situation and the political oligarchy emerged in Brazil.

José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva was the First Secretary of State and prime minister of Imperial Brazil. He was actively involved in the Brazilian independence movement. He urged Prince Pedro to officially declare independence from Portugal and to form the Brazilian empire in 1822 when he serve as an adviser and chief minister. After the establishment of Imperial Brazil, he became Minister of Interior and Foreign Affairs. Later he returned to serve as Emperor Pedro II's tutor, making him a relatively enlightened monarch later. The factors of his knowledge, his experience of study and geological exploration in Portugal, his courage and insight made him so influential in Brazil. Despite his successes, he rapidly fell from favor. In 1823, he supported the Parliament drafted a constitution based on the separation of powers, which advocated the deprivation of the election right of Portuguese the emperor's power. Emperor Pedro I was dissatisfied with this constitution and disband the parliament, sending José Bonifácio into exile. Later he returned Brazil and joined in Regency Council to be in office, yet facing the more complicated and chaotic unrest, his liberalism and democracy ideologies couldnt solve the problems. However, he ultimately championed as the "father of Brazilian independence" because he had contributed to Brazil’s independence and historic progresses.

For the nascent Brazilian Empire, there were four major questions to be resolved: political and economic contradictions between the conservative aristocracy and liberalists, domestically remnant Portugal forces, border conflict with Argentina and the domestic independent voice from Uruguay and other regions.

Nineteenth-century liberalism began to gradually deviate from the pure classical liberalism of seventeenth and eighteenth liberalism, advocating that individuals shall enjoy enough freedom, the free market shall be suggested, the laissez-faire economy does not work and the government shall expand its power to guide and control the national economy to be responsible for the whole society. In my opinion, I think colonies than in metropolitan Europe both need liberalism, but liberalism always served as a weapon for independence and played the political role in colonies because the colonies needed the appropriate grounds and opportunity moment to promote independence movement and liberalism would be regarded as a tool for developing economy and social well-being for the metropolitan countries of Europe because these countries had more developed economy.

Although radical liberals emphasize rights and hold that individual rights must not be violated, they argue that rights can be sacrificed for social progress. In addition, radical liberals advocate that as long as for good will and benefit, people can ignore an individual’s willingness and make decisions for the individual. These are the issues that separated radical liberals from their ideological opponents.
